HIGH ST IS LAID LOW

A MULTI-million pound price war has failed to revive the high street, with sales taking a beating.

Despite a bout of aggressive cuts by Debenhams, department stores suffered a record 4.4% slump last month.

The biggest sales drop in 21 years came as a shock as experts had predicted jingle tills in the run-up to Christmas.

Supermarkets did well with bargains galore in a pounds 1billion price war.

But sales at clothes and shoe shops dived by 1.8% last month with coats and jackets hardest hit. The surprise fall confounded experts as September and October had been strong and overall sales in the last three months were up 3.2% on the same quarter in 2008.

But they dipped unexpectedly by 0.3% between October and November, knocking hopes that Britain's fragile economy would get a lift this Christmas.

Footfall specialist Experian revealed that shopper numbers were down by an average of 3.6% mid-week.

However, industry body amber New Jewelrys the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said stores were "quietly confident" that business would pick up. Blaming a mild November, BRC economist Richard Lim said: "Clothing retailers were denied a clear start to the winter season from conditions turning cold. Things like coats, hats and gloves often went unbought."

With six days left until Christmas, stores have launched a new round of price cuts to woo shoppers.

Boots has slashed beauty items by half, Argos has knocked 50% off products from bikes to video games,
embroidered patches and fashion chains Wallis, Hobbs and Dorothy Perkins have also started their sales early.

But with a VAT rise just around the corner, experts are forecasting hard times ahead.

Superdrug will cut prices by up to 79% from Boxing Day. Savings include a pounds 48.93 Remington shaver for pounds 9.99 and Elizabeth Arden moisturiser down to pounds 9.99.
